Abstract

666,138. Beet harvesters. ORTON, T. April 4, 1950 [Dec. 20, 1948], No. 32847/48. Class 6(iii) The topping knife of a beet harvester and the device which positions it vertically upon encountering the crowns of the beet are carried by a horizontal bar which is supported at each end on a coiled spring and which rises against the action of further coiled springs, one above each end of the bar, when the tops of the beets are contacted. In the construction shown the machine comprises a pair of spaced side skids 1 connected to an upper framework 2. At the front of the machine -there are a pair of spaced channels 3. in which fit the ends of a laterally extending bar 4, there being compression springs both above and below this bar, arranged in the channels. The bar carries a feeler 6 which rides over the crowns of the beets and a topping knife 8. The severed tops are thrown to the side of the machine, where they can be picked up by an elevator, by a spinner 11 on a shaft 14, the latter being driven by a shaft 12 which is connected to the power take-off shaft of a tractor. Shaft 14 drives, via a shaft 16, another shaft carrying a spinner 18 which serves to discharge the roots after they have been lifted by shares 19. The shares are raised and lowered by a bellcrank 25 which is moved by a handle 28. One of the skids is fitted with a long bar which can be adjusted latterly of the machine and enables the machine to be adjusted with respect to lines of beets.
