Abstract
494,718. Topping beet &c. SMITH, J. E. April 26, 1937, Nos. 11900/37 and 3566/38. [Class 6 (iii)] A beet or like crop harvester and topper comprises a frame a supported on front wheels b and rear wheels c carrying a platform h from which an auxiliary frame, guided by vertical telescopic members v, w, is hung by adjustable rods 1 and springs x. The auxiliary frame carries a skid device consisting of three fingers 3 adapted to engage and ride over the beet tops. The cutter which consists of two rotary disc knives s, t is mounted on vertical shafts driven from the axle of the wheel b. The auxiliary frame with the knives is raised or lowered by the skid device engaging a top and is so positioned for the cut. The topped roots are lifted by a pair of inclined blades 5 and the lifted roots are thrown to one side by rotating arms 10. For transport, the rear end of the machine may be raised by a hand crank 26 actuating pinions engaging racks on vertical bars 19 extending from the axle of the wheels c. The topping device may be mounted on a separate carriage and used independently of the lifter. A curved knife may replace the rotary discs s, t. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 22095/01, 13635/05, [both in Class 6], 21483/11, 171,709, 260,827, 317,825, and 326,639, [all in Class 6 (iii)].
