Abstract

665,629. Change-speed gearing. CIERVA AUTOGIRO CO., Ltd., PULLIN, C. G., and WATSON, K. April 27, 1950 [Feb. 4, 1949], No. 3124/49. Class 80 (ii). In a constant-mesh two-speed gear for a helicopter rotor, high speed drive from an enginedriven sleeve 5 is via a manually-controllable friction clutch 9, a one-way roller clutch 19, sleeve 21 and gears 30, 31, while low-speed drive from the sleeve 5 is via a one-way roller clutch 22 and gears 32, 33, the roller cage 24 of the clutch 22 being engaged by one arm of bell-crank levers 26 pivoted in the gear 32 and loaded by springs 28 tending to turn the cage so as to disengage the clutch in opposition to centrifugal masses 27 on the other arm of the levers, so that the clutch 22 is disengaged below a certain critical speed. At starting, clutch 22 being disengaged, drive is taken up by the friction clutch 9 in high gear. When the critical speed is exceeded, the clutch 9 may be disengaged to allow the clutch 22 to take up the drive in low gear.
