Abstract

665,408. Shearing. RHODES, C. J. Aug. 18, 1950 [Aug. 19, 1949], No. 21658/49. Addition to 556,836. Class 83 (iv). In a modification of the invention of the parent Specification the slidable rod 1 operated hydraulically to raise and lower the beam which carries the cutting tool (not shown) acts against a return spring 11 as it moves to lower the beam, the spring being prestressed sufficiently to hold the beam in the raised position independently of the hydraulic means. The rod 1 is caused to slide in fixed guides 2a, 2b by a piston 6 operating in a double-ended cylinder 7 and the beam is raised or lowered by links 3 pivotally attached to collars 4, 5 on the rod 1. The spring 11 is centred at one end by a boss 12a on a lock nut 12 which retains the collar 4 against a shoulder 13 on the rod. The other end of the spring is centred by a head 14a on a liner 14 in the guide 2a. In long stroke machines a peripherally flanged guide sleeve 15 for the spring is loosely mounted on the rod 1.
