Abstract

The dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols to ketones is effected by passing the alcohol over a catalyst comprising an oxide of Mg, Zn or Be and from 6 to 12 per cent of an oxide of Zr, Ce or Th based on the total weight of the mixture. The catalyst may also contain silica, ferric oxide or alumina and may be supported. The alcohol is passed over the catalyst at a temperature of 400-1000 DEG F., at a pressure of 1-2 atmospheres and at a rate of 0.5 to 10 volumes of liquid alcohol per volume of catalyst per hour. Specification 337,566, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.ALSO:A catalyst for the dehydrogenation of alcohols (see Group IVb) comprises a mixture of an oxide of magnesium, zinc or beryllium and from 6 to 12 per cent of an oxide of zirconium, cerium or thorium based on the total weight of the mixture. The oxide of zirconium, cerium or thorium may also contain from 6 to 10 per cent by weight of silica, ferric oxide or alumina. The catalyst may be supported on, for example, pumice, brass or steel turnings, and may be prepared by mixing the oxides in powder form, adding water to make a slurry, coating the slurry on the carrier and drying at about 80 DEG C. Specification 337,566, [Class 1(i)], is referred to.
