Abstract

1,053,164. Terephthalic acid esters. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. April 17, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 15930/64. Heading C2C. Terephthalic acid esters are made by passing the superheated vapour of an alcohol through a stationary layer of terephthalic acid and then passing the resulting mixture of vapours through an esterification chamber containing a solid catalyst. The terephthalic acid is preferably used in the form of tablets or briquettes. The reaction may be effected at about 250- 450‹ C. under atmospheric, reduced or raised pressure, and the molar ratio of terephthalic acid to alcohol may be from 1: 20 to 1: 50. Specified catalysts are quartz, silica gel, alumina, zirconium oxide, thorium oxide, iron phosphate, aluminium phosphate, sodium silicate and a mixture of equal parts of quartz and zinc borate. Examples are given of the manufacture of methyl, n-propyl and n-butyl terephthalates and reference is made to the manufacture of cycloaliphatic and aromatic terephthalates.
