Ethyl aceto-acetate and similar esters are produced by heating an ester of an alcohol containing less than four carbon atoms with an aliphatic carboxylic acid, such as ethyl acetate, with an alkali metal alcoholate and distilling off the liberated alcohol during the reaction. In an example, using ethyl acetate and sodium ethylate, the alcohol and unchanged ethyl acetate are distilled in a column still as completely as possible, and the remaining mass is treated with an acid in the known manner and the ester fractionated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited as to the nature of the ester employed.
