Abstract

Orthoformic acid esters of alcohols containing 2-6 carbon atoms are made transesterifying an orthoformic ester of an alcohol having fewer carbon atoms than said alcohol with an alcohol having 2-6 carbon atoms in the presence of 0.01 to 1% by weight of formic acid, based on the orthoformic ester used. The liberated alcohol can be recovered by distillation. The unreacted initial ester, unreacted alcohol and any partially trans-esterified esters can be distilled off from the reaction mixture and recycled with fresh reactants. Examples relate to the preparation of triethyl-, tri-iso-propyl-, tri-propyl-, tri-butyl and tri-hexyl orthoformates from tri-methyl orthoformate.
