Abstract
664,822. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., ANDERSON, J. T., and WELLS, R. S. April 12, 1949 [April 9, 1948], No. 9999/48. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (i). A luminescent material comprises a manganese activated zinc-barium silicate having the general formula 2ZnO.BaO.XSiO 2 , where X is between 1.7 and 12 and preferably 2. The material has a deep-red luminescence peaked at 6750‹ A, when excited by U.V. radiation of 2537‹ A. The manganese is added as MnCl 2 .HH 2 O in an amount of 5 per cent of the dry ingredients, but may vary from 2¢ to 10 per cent. Zinc is normally added as zinc oxide and barium as the carbonate, but in each case materials may be used which yield the oxide on heating. The mixture is fired at 1100‹ Œ 50‹ C. for up to 5 hours or more. The luminescence of zinc-barium-manganese silicates of proportions different from above is discussed.
