Abstract
582,122. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., JENKINS, H. G., McKEAG, A. H., and RANBY, P. W. April 10, 1941, No. 4764. [Class 39 (i)] A luminescent material with substantial after-glow when excited by cathode or X-rays consists of an alkaline earth phosphate activated with dysprosium. In one method of manufacture, calcium carbonate is formed from determined quantities of calcium chloride and ammonium carbonate, the chloride having been purified by ammonium sulphide; 40 grams of the dried carbonate is mixed with 52 grams diammonium hydrogen phosphate and 50 ml. solution of dysprosium sulphate with 0.1 per cent of dysprosium. The mixture is dried, ground, fired at 1050-1100‹ C. in air and then lightly ground. In another method, calcium carbonate is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and the phosphate formed from this solution. In a third method, carbonate is formed as in the first method and dilute phosphoric acid is used therewith to form the phosphate. Barium or strontium may be used instead of or mixed with the calcium; the phosphate radical is preferred as the meta- or ortho-phosphate. Some terbium may be added to the dysprosium. Specification 490,663 is referred to.
