Abstract

578,192. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., McKEAG, A. H., and RANBY, P. W. June 17,1942, Nos. 8308, 11918 and 17405. [Class 39 (i)] Luminescent material for use in fluorescent lamps, cathode-ray tubes and X-ray screens consists of a halo-phosphate, i.e. calcium and/or strontium phosphate with a calcium and/or strontium halide (other than iodide) activated by antimony, preferably between 2 and 6 per cent. Manganese may also be added up to 10 per cent. A table is given of the colour of luminescent light obtained with 3 per cent Sb and varying amounts of Mn 0-5 per cent with various matrices when energized by radiation at 2537 Š. Preferred methods of preparing are set forth : calcium or strontium phosphate are obtained from the carbonate and phosphoric acid; manganese phosphate from ammonium hydrogen phosphate and manganese chloride ; calcium fluoride from the chloride and ammonium fluoride. Proportions of materials for various mixes are set out, the antimony being usually added as trioxide. The mixtures are, for example, ground, heated, ground, heated, ground again, washed with distilled water and dried at 160‹ C. ; the heating temperature is between 1000-1150‹ C. Specifications 495,706, [Group XX], and 516,870 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specifications, barium and iodine may be used.
