Abstract
745,560. Luminescent materials. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd. July 10, 1953 [July 21, 1952], No. 18341/52. Class 39 (1). Method of preparing lead and manganese activated calcium silicate for excitation by radiation of 2537 A in a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp comprises mixing compounds of calcium and silicon, e.g. calcium carbonate and silicon dioxide, a compound of manganese, e.g. the carbonate, and the fluorides of lead and of an alkaline earth metal, e.g. calcium, and firing the mixture in steam at about 1150‹ C. for about 1 hour, allowing the material' to cool, adding ammonium chloride and re-mixing and firing at the same temperature for another hour. The proportion of silicon di-oxide can be slightly in excess of that required to produce calcium meta-silicate and the amount of ammonium chloride can be between 1 and 10 per cent by weight of the material to which it is added.
