Abstract
820,943. Luminescent materials ; discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 20, 1955 [Dec. 23, 1954], No. 36455/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(1). A method of producing a luminescent material including a lead-activated strontium silicate, particularly for exhibiting a maximum emission of radiation between 3200Š, and 3700Š under excitation by radiation of 2537Š, when used in or on a low pressure mercury vapour discharge tube or on a reflector outside the tube, is characterized by preparing a mixture of compounds of strontium, silicon, lead and either or both of the metals zinc and magnesium, and, if desired, barium, and/or calcium, and heating the mixture in an oxidising atmosphere to a temperature between 900‹C. and 1200‹C. for from 1 to 5 hours, the amounts of the compounds being such that the proportions of the said elements in the mixture satisfy specified atomic ratio conditions. At least one of the compounds employed can be an oxide, nitrate or carbonate. A fusing salt can be used consisting of the fluoride of at least one of the elements, strontium, barium and calcium, and/or that of lead. The luminescent material is stated to contain a substance with the formula M2NSi2O7: Pb, where M designates atoms of Sr or Sr and Ca and/or Ba and N designates atoms of Mg and/or Zn. The X-ray diffraction diagram and the intensity of radiation-wave length curves for the materials are given.
