Abstract

A strontium fluoroborate phosphor is of formula 5r 0 . 90 to Sr 0 . 99 F 0 . 50 to F 1 . 00 8 3 . 0 to B 4 . 45 O 5 to O 7 . 45 Eu 0 . 005 to Eu 0 . 05 or Sr 1-x F 0À67 B 4 O 6À67 : Eu x , where x is between 0-005 to 0.05. The europium is preferably in the divalent state. In preparation, strontium nitrate, boric acid, and Eu 2 O 3 are dissolved in water at 95‹ C. and an acetone and ammonium hydroxide mixture added to produce a SrO.3B 2 O 2 .5H 2 O plus europium borate precipitate. The dried precipitate with SrF 2 additions is fired in air at 800‹ C., pulverized and refired at 890‹ C. in 1 to 2% hydrogen in nitrogen for instance. Excitation by a low pressure mercury discharge to produce U.V. emission is mentioned.
