Abstract

1,192,951. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [27 Jan.. 1967], No. 4096/67. Heading C4S. YVO 4 phosphor actuated by Eu, Sm or Dy contains an additive of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn or B in an amount to increase its brightness of luminescence when excited by cathode rays and U.V. radiation. The phosphor is prepared by heating twice a mixture of Y 2 O 3 , NH 4 V0 3 , Eu 2 0 3 and H 3 BO 3 in air, the Y 2 0 3 may be added in stages during heating. Another method comprises adding HCl to an aqueous suspension of Y 2 O 3 and Eu 2 O 3 to form an acid solution. This is added to an NB 4 VO 3 solution in NH 4 0H to precipitate rare earth and Y vanadate which is mixed with H 3 B0 3 and heated three times. In other methods an aqueous solution of one ingredient is formed and the remaining ingredients are added or mixed oxalates of Y, rare earth and additive are co-precipitated and this is heated with V 2 O 5 or NH 4 VO 3 . The additive may be in the form of MgBr 2 , MgO, MgS0 4 , CaBr 2 , SrCl 2 , Ba(N0 3 ) 2 or ZnCl 2 . The phosphor is used in C.R.T.'s and Hg vapour discharge tubes.
