Abstract

1,208,565. Luminescent materials. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 9 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45171/66. Heading C4S. A phosphor, the overall hue of the emission of which is non-red, comprises yttria and at least one activator selected from the stable lanthanide oxides of La, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu. Phosphors, including those with overall red emissions, may comprise yttria activated with La: Ce; Dy: Ce; Ho: Ce; Tm: Ce; Sm: Pr; Eu: Pr; Dy: Pr; Sn: La; Tb: La; Dy: La; Tm: La; Yb: La; Tm: Nd; La: Yb; Tb: Yb; Dy: Yb; Ho: Yb; Tm: Yb; La: Gd; Sm: Tb; Gd: Tb; Dy; Tb; Ho: Tb; Er: Tb; Tm: Tb; Yb: Tb; Lu: Tb; Gd: Tm; Lu: Tm; Gd: Dy; Ho: Gd; Lu: Sm; Dy: Lu; Ho: Lu; Sm: Ho; and Eu: Er. A modification comprises yttria with oxides of Gd, Dy and also Sm in respective, atomic ratios of 1, 0À5, and 0À5%. The activators may be present in total amount 0À01, to 15 atomic per cent, e.g. 0.5 to 5 atomic per cent. The preparation may be by mixing yttria and the lanthanide oxide(s) in acid (e.g. HNO 3 and/or HCl), separating the lanthanides from the solution and converting to the oxides preferably by calcining (e.g. 1000‹ to 2000‹ C. for 2 hours) ; either the solution may be evaporated and the deposit calcined; or an excess of ammonium hydroxide added to the solution, the filtered precipitate washed with dilute ammonia, dried and calcined; or the solution concentrated by heating, then lanthanides precipitated by, for example, a complexing agent such as a salt of E.D.T.A. with adjustment of the pH value, dried and calcined, or the solution may be diluted with warm distilled water, warm oxalic, acid or ammonium oxalate added, -the precipitate dried and calcined. Emission wavelengths in the 4900 to 5650 Š range are instanced and also excitation by X-rays and cathode rays. Reference is made to persistence times up to 50 nanoseconds.
