Abstract

1,232,570. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 10 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968; 18 Sept., 1968], No. 12468/69. Heading C4S. A luminescent fluoride of La, Gd, Y or Lu is activated by Er and/or Tm and also contains Yb. It has a formula Ln 1-x-y Yb x RyF 3 where Ln is La, Gd, Y or Lu; R is Er or Tm; 0À8> x >0À04 and 0À1>y>0À00005. LaF 3 : Yb, Er is prepared by dissolving the rare earth oxides in HNO 3 , adding oxalic acid to precipitate oxalate, then heating the oxalate first in air to form the oxide then in HF and N 2 to form the fluoride. Alternatively mixed fluorides are heated in inert or HF atmosphere. The phosphors emit visible light when excited by infra red radiation by a double excitation process.
