Abstract

1525927 Luminescence DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 5 Nov 1975 [13 Nov 1974] 49196/74 Heading C4S A phosphor material is produced by processing an intermediate divalent Eu activated mixed metal phosphate composition of the general formula before firing in a reducing atmosphere where M<SP>I</SP> is one of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs; M<SP>II</SP> is one of Ca, Sr, Ba; a is 0À95 to 1À05 (e.g. 1À0), b is 0À95 to 1À05 (e.g. 0À98 to 1À03) and c is 0À0001 to 0À025 (e.g. 0À01), and an additive which is at least one of (i) a carbonate, silicate of a said Group Ia element, (ii) a carbonate, silicate, or aluminate of a said Group IIa element in such proportions that any of said carbonate, silicate or aluminate comprises up to 0À7 mole of the mixture, the phosphor being capable of electroluminescence, fluorescence, phosphorescence, and/or cathodoluminescence. The components may be slurried with water, and fired in a reducing atmosphere at 900 to 1200‹ C. so that sintering or fusing does not occur. Alternatively, starting materials for the intermediate.composition are mixed with at least one of a carbonate, or silicate of the Group Ia or Group IIa elements, or an aluminate of the Group IIa elements, slurrying, grinding, and firing stages being detailed before a further firing at 900 to 1100‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere. Specific phosphors are disclosed.
