Abstract

664.710. Stuffing-box substitutes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., LEVITATION, Ltd., and THORNHILL, P. W. May 3, 1950 [June 8, 1949], No. 15304/49. Class 122(v) A packing device for use between elements of fluid pressure apparatus having relative rectilinear movement comprises a first ring 26 of relatively hard flexible and resilient material adapted to be supported on one of the relatively movable elements 10 and to slide on the surface of the other said element 16, and a second ring 24 of softer flexible and resilient material interposed radially between the first ring 26 and a surface on the element 10 on which that ring is supported, the surface of the first ring 26 which engages the other said element 16 being formed with a plurality of circumferential grooves 28. Pressure fluid is contained in the space 21, The grooves 28 are so arranged that the material on the side of each groove nearer to the outer side of the packing forms a lip urged against the said other element 16 by fluid pressure in that groove. The second ring 24 is subjected to radial compression between the first ring 26 and said surface on the element 10. Two modified arrangements of the packing device are shown, and particulars are also given of grooves of various cross sections. The first ring 26 is of Nylon, and in the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 there is provided a metal spacing ring 23.
