A recorder comprising an openable casing enclosing a time record sheet associated with tracing means movable relatively thereto and adapted to trace a line thereon, is so arranged that the tracing means makes a distinctive mark on the sheet when the casing is opened or closed. Recording rest or motion. The apparatus, which records the state of rest or motion of a vehicle or a machine and also when the recorder casing is opened and closed, comprises a clockwork or electrically-rotated paper time disc 5, Fig. 1, in the front half 1 of a casing, and a pivoted lever arm 10 carrying a stylus 11 in the back half 2 of the casing, the two halves of the casing being hinged at 3. The lever arm 10 has a weight 12 at its lower end such that, when the vehicle or the machine is in motion, the resultant vibration rocks the weight 12 and causes a thick line 32, Fig. 7, to appear on the disc 5 by means of the stylus 11. During rest periods the stylus leaves a thin line 31 on the disc. The pivot 13 for the arm 10 is on one arm of a bifurfurcated member 9, the other arm of the member 9 being pivoted to a bracket 8 such that when the casing is closed clamping fingers 6 and 7 holding the disc 5 in position, engage with and drive an actuator 16 turning the member 9 about the bracket 8. In this manner, a spiral record is made on the disc 5. The disc 5 is preferably coloured red and given a thin coating of wax. Recording opening and closing of casing. Below the stylus 11, Fig. 2, the paper disc 5 rests on the head 25 of a plunger 21, the head 25 being normally held above a surrounding sleeve 20. Unlocking of the casing depresses one end 30 of a pivoted lever 26, the other end of which raises the said sleeve 20 and thereby the paper 5 above the supporting head 25 to cause the stylus to puncture or permanently mark the sheet as at 33. When the casing is closed a similar impression 34 is made until the casing is locked, when the sleeve 20 falls below the supporting head 25 and normal recordings are then made.
