A gramophone pick-up arm device comprising a pick-up arm 9 pivoted on a vertical axis 4, which lies in the plane through the armature axis, comprising also a geared motor assembly 13 arranged to rotate the arm 6 carrying the pivot 4 such that the vertical plane containing the armature axis remains substantially tangential to the record groove in which the stylus happens to be. A friction clutch 14 enables the arm 6 to be set initially at a suitable position for the record to be played and a followup mechanism carrying the contacts 5, 8 controls the operation of the motor assembly 13. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the pivot 4 is fitted to a carriage which is urged along a straight track at right-angles to the pick-up arm by a motor assembly with similar control means to achieve the same object.
