Abstract
664,561. Photo-electric control systems. SIMON-CARVES, Ltd. April 13, 1950 [May 2, 1949], No. 11616/49. Class 40 (iii). [Also in Group XII] In an improvement in or modification of the safety means for use in discharging coke from coke ovens by means of a ram machine on one side of the oven and a coke guide machine on the other side according to Specification 593,609, the projector lamp a is fitted with a motor-driven disc arranged to interrupt the light beam so as to give approximately 40 pulses per second and the light-sensitive cell d has its anode connected to the positive side of a voltage supply and its cathode connected through a high-resistance R' to earth. The junction between the cathode and the resistance is connected through a condenser C1 to the control grid of a thermionic valve V, the valve anode having a coupling resistance R2 and a condenser C2, the latter having a connection e to the input circuit of an amplifier which may energize a relay enabling the ram motor to be operated. The valve cathode is biased by a resistance R3 and there is a grid leak R4. With this circuit, if the cell receives no light or a steady light, the conductor leading to the grid of the first amplifier valve has the same potential as HT -, but if the cell receives the interrupted beam, the valve V passes on a signal to the amplifier with the result that relay means for enabling the ram motor to come into operation are actuated.
