Abstract

840,810. Photo-electric control arrangements. ELCONTROL Ltd. May 12, 1955 [May 13, 1954], No. 2295/57. Divided out of 14011/54. Class 40(3). A light sensitive circuit for generating pulses in accordance with changes of illumination comprises a photo-cell 10 connected between the grid of hard valve VI and a point on resistor R maintained at a suitable negative potential. The output at the anode of VI is coupled to the grid of a second hard valve V2 by means of glow discharge tube 13 and the anode output of V2 which is the pulse output may be fed to a utilization circuit such as a dekatron counter S1. When the photo-cell is dark current flows in V1, the potential across 13 is insufficient to cause it to strike and V2 is cut-off due to the negative bias applied to its grid from line 14. Illuminating the cell causes it to conduct, cutting off V1, increasing the potential across tube 13 to cause it to strike and thus cause V2 to conduct. The result is a negative going front edge to an output pulse at the anode of V2, the rear edge of the pulse occurs when the illumination falls to a value at which tube 13 ceases to conduct. Differentiation results in negative and positive going short pulses at the front and rear edges of the output pulse (as shown) and if desired one or other of these short pulses may be suppressed, as for example by diode D.
