An arrangement for suspending and displacing the control set 1 of a machine tool or other apparatus comprises a bracket 5 pivoted about a vertical axis, a carriage 4 movable along the bracket, means for suspending the control set or box passing over the carriage, and motor operated means for moving the carriage along the bracket and for adjusting the height of the control set. The control set is suspended by means of a chain 2 which passes over rollers 3 on the carriage 4, a motor driven sprocket 11 and rollers 12, through the hollow spindle 6 and over pulleys 13, 14 on a block 15 supporting a counterweight 16, to an anchorage 17 fixed to the rotatable spindle 6. A multicore core cable 24 passes round a pulley 25 on the block 15 and other pulleys (not shown) to the control set. The carriage is moved by means of a chain 18 which is connected at 19 to the carriage and then passes round a sprocket 20 and a motor driven sprocket 22, the other end of the chain being connected by a tensioning spring 23 to the other end of the carriage. In addition to the control gear for the machine tool, the control set 1 has a switch panel 39, Fig. 4 for controlling the motors driving the sprockets 11, 22, the panel being provided with push-buttons 34 ... 37, a pictorial representation 38 and indicating arrows 50. Operation of the push button 36 or 37 causes the energisation of the reversible motor coupled to the sprocket 11 to lower or raise the control set 1, the sprocket 11 driving the chain 2 in the appropriate direction. To prevent an alteration in the height of the control set when the carriage 4 is moved, the operation of the pushbutton 34 or 35 not only causes the energisation of the reversible motor coupled to the sprocket 22 to cause the sprocket 22 to drive the chain 18 to move the carriage in the selected direction but also causes the energisation of the motor coupled to the sprocket 11 to move the suspension chain 2 by the amount necessary to compensate for the movement of the carriage. Limit switches 45, 46 operated by the carriage 4 determine the permissible travel of the carriage and relays (Fig. 5, not shown) provide an electrical interlock to avoid damage if pushbuttons 34 and 35 or 36 and 37 should be depressed simultaneously.
