Abstract
661,934. Tubular heat exchangers. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd., STEWART, D. A., and ALLEN, W. H. Feb. 16, 1950 [April 23,1949 ; Sept. 14, 1949], Nos. 10844/49 and 23680/49. Class 64(iii) Relates to tubular heat exchangers in which helically finned tubes c pass through baffles b which direct air or other fluid in a zig-zag path through a housing containing the tubes. According to the invention, at the position where a finned tube passes through a baffle, a byepass flow of the fluid through the baffle by way of the fin groove is prevented by the provision of hole-closure means made from metal and adapted to occupy the hole in the baffle and at least one of the spaces between the fin convolutions. The hole-closure means may comprise a flanged sleeve a, Fig. 1, adapted to be secured along the helical fin of the tube c. Alternatively one or more split rings f, Figs. 4 and 5, or a helically coiled strip may be used. The ring f shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is a modification whereby each ring may be inserted laterally into the space between a pair of fin convolutions, adjacent rings being disposed so that the gaps g are not in alignment.
