Abstract
Paper is dyed by incorporating in the pulp a water-soluble addition or condensation product of a sulphur dyestuff and a salt of sulphurous acid. The dyestuff is advantageously added in the form of a neutral or weakly alkaline solution to the paper pulp before, together with, or after the addition of substances used for sizing, e.g. rosin size. The size and the dyestuff may then be fixed by means of aluminium sulphate or a salt of another polyvalent metal, particularly a ferric or chromic salt. The usual reducing agents for sulphur dyes are not required. In examples: (1) ground unbleached sulphite cellulose is mixed in a hollander with rosin size, Pyrogene Deep Black D which has been rendered soluble by means of bisulphite, and aluminium sulphate; (2) bleached sulphite cellulose is mixed in the hollander with rosin size, Pyrogene Green 3G rendered soluble by means of bisulphite and aluminium sulphate; (3) a mixture consisting of unbleached sulphite cellulose and wood pulp is mixed with the dyestuff obtained by sulphurizing potassium 2,6 - dinitrotoluene - 4 - sulphonate rendered soluble by means of neutral sulphite, rosin size and aluminium sulphate; and (4) ground unbleached sulphite cellulose is mixed in a hollander with rosin size, Pyrogene Deep Black D rendered soluble by the action of bisulphite, and ferric chloride. Specifications 5168/01, [Class 2], 2290/09, [Class 15 (ii)], and 528,118 are referred to.
