Abstract

661,287. Turf-piercing machines. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Jan. 3, 1950 [Dec. 10, 1948], No. 31990/48. Class 6(i) In a turf - piercing machine having axially reciprocable tines 43, the tines are tilted during insertion, at a rate corresponding to the forward speed of the machine, but opposite in direction, so as to maintain a substantially constant angle of insertion. The machine is mounted on side frames 11 supported by a roller 12 driven by an engine 17 and is steered by handles 14. The engine 17 drives a crankshaft 18 through belt-gearing 19. The tines are freely supported by a shaft 38 to which simultaneous vertical and horizontal move ments are applied from a crank 41, and from an eccentric 34 driven from the crankshaft 18 through belt-gearing 22, 23 The roller 12 is back-geared from the shaft 24 of the eccentric through a unit 28, loose on the crankshaft 18. The eccentric moves horizontally in same direction as the machine during withdrawal of the tines so that the angle of withdrawal is not constant, but this can be avoided by using cams in place of the eccentric 34. For transport, the machine is tilted forwardly on to the roller 47.
