Abstract
661,251. Hand-irons. DAHL, E. G. Aug. 23, 1949, No. 21842/49. Class 138 (ii). A flat iron is provided with rollers 3, 4 carrying an endless wetting strip 5 adapted to move along the ironing face of the iron in use, a compartment 7 for water to be heated by means of an electric heating element 8, and having a plurality of openings 12 through the bottom for wetting the strip 5 with water or steam, and a water tank 14 adapted to feed water through a conduit 13 to the water compartment 7. The heating element 8 is covered by an insulating cover 9. The tank 14 has an air and water inlet opening which can be closed in an air-tight manner by a closure cap 18 to cut off the supply of water through the conduit 13. By adjusting the cap 18 the supply of water and/or steam through the openings 12 in the base of the iron can be controlled. The conduit 13 may be so shaped as to permit the water merely to drip into the compartment 7. In a modification, Fig. 3, two compartments 20, 7 are provided, the water in the upper compartment 20 being preheated by a resistance element 21 and overflowing into the lower compartment 7 by way of a conduit 22. The water tank 14 feeds the compartment 20 through a pipe 23 controlled by a valve 24 operated by a pressure knob 25 in the handle of the iron. A safety-valve (not shown) may be provided.
