Abstract
<PICT:0660983/IV (a)/1> Filaments, e.g. of artificial resin and rubber, are obtained by discharging under pressure a continuous stream of a solidifiable filament forming liquid into the centre of a viscously-flowing supporting and confining liquid stream whose central portion moves in the same direction, and at substantially the same speed as the solidifiable liquid, and continuing the joint movement of the streams until solidification of the filament stream is effected. In an example, rubber latex is supplied from container 34 through a siphon 36 and hose 38. Container 34 may be suspended by a spring 41 so arranged that a constant head of latex is provided. The latex is extruded through nozzle 16 into the centre of tube 10 through which heated glycerine 40 flows viscously. The solidifying latex thread 42 and the glycerine pass together without substantial relative movement until the solidified thread leaves the tube and passes over roller 44 and the glycerine is discharged into sump 28 from whence it is dehydrated and pumped up to reservoir 22.
