Abstract

1434926 Impregnating tows IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 10 April 1973 [25 April 1972] 19225/72 Headings D1L and D1R Fibre tow is impregnated with resin by causing relative movement between the tow and a resin dispenser nozzle spaced from the tow and feeding resin from the nozzle onto the tow so that the resin leaves the nozzle and thereafter flows freely onto the tow at a controlled rate such that substantially all of the dispensed resin is retained by the tow. The resin can flow to the nozzle by gravity or via an peristaltic pump. The resin, e.g. epoxy resin, can be a melt, solution or dispersion. The tow may comprise glass or carbon fibre. The impregnated resin can be dried and partially cured in an oven, flattened into a band, and wound into a package.
