660,745. Fluid pressure brakes. WESTING HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 6, 1949 [Sept. 7, 1948], No. 23024/49. Class 103 (i). In fluid pressure braking apparatus, for railway and like vehicles, of the type in which the braking pressure is varied in accordance with the load on the vehicle by means of a fulcrum, forming part of the control gear, which is adapted to be moved by linkage connected to an unsprung part of the vehicle, the displacement of the fulcrum is arranged to be automatically prevented while the brakes are applied. This is brought about by use of a special construction of carriage 21 having a slot therein through which passes a slider 29 connected at one end by links 23, 25 and bellcrank 24 to an unsprung vehicle part 26, and at the other end to an anchored spring 28. When there is no downward pressure, due to the action of the control gear, on the fulcrum lever 9, a plate 34 is caused by springs 35 to clamp the slider 29 in the carriage 21, so that movements of the links 23, 27 are transmitted to the fulcrum 20. If, however, there is substantial downward pressure on fulcrum 20, the plate 34 is pressed down on springs 35 so that the slider 29 is loose in the carriage and consequently will not transmit jolts caused by the wheels running over rail joints to the fluid pressure control gear fulcrum.
