Abstract

660,399. Bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 29, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8977/49. Class 12 (i). A ball or roller bearing cage comprises members 1, 2 each having the same number of roller receiving recesses 3, the recesses in either member extending alternately from opposite edges, the members being assembled so that pairs of recesses, one in each member and open ended in opposite senses, are in register, thereby forming a cage having roller retaining recesses closed at both ends. The edges 4 of the recesses are chamfered as at 7 so as to present tangential rubbing surfaces to the rollers, and retain them in position. The members 1, 2 may be made of thin synthetic plastic material or metal and may be joined together by an adhesive or rivets. For the insertion or removal of rollers, the inner sleeve 2 may be split with a fine saw, and then distorted. For a double-row bearing the recesses may be alternately long and short so that the rollers in each row are pitched apart by the distance between adjacent long or short recesses in each member.
