Abstract

867,755. Rectilinear - motion bearings. LYTHALLS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. May 4, 1959 [May 17, 1958; June 9, 1958], Nos. 15918/58 and 18299/58. Class 12 (1). A rectilinear-motion bearing, for a table or slide of a machine tool or other apparatus having a V-shaped guideway, comprises a carrier in the form of a strip of sheet metal or synthetic plastic material of V-shape in transverse cross'-section or, alternatively, in the form of a pair of flat strips arranged adjacent the inclined walls of the guideway, each strip having therein a number of apertures 2, in each of which is mounted a roller 3. The longitudinal edges of each aperture are formed with three tongues which are bent transversely of the strip to hold the roller, the centre tongue 5 being bent in the opposite direction to the tongues 4 and corresponding tongues at opposite edges of each aperture being bent in opposite directions. The pair of strips 1, which may be hinged together have mutually - engaging notches 10, are positioned in V-shaped grooves 7, Fig. 6, of a machine tool, for example, to facilitate movement of a table 8. In a modification, Fig. 7, the rollers are mounted in seating members 16, made of a flexible material such as polyethylene. Each member 16 has a part-cylindrical concave face 18 to engage the roller 3 and has a bifurcated flange which receives an edge of the strip 15 bounding the aperture. On assembly, a roller may be mounted in one of the seating members 16 and the other seating member is then forced into position. Alternatively the seating members are positioned on the strip 15 and the rollers inserted and retained in position by a continuous or intermittent closure strip 19 attached to the carrier. One or more rows of rollers could be mounted in the strips which, if flexible, could be formed into an endless band.
