Abstract

Ketones of the general formula <FORM:0659842/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen or the 2 : 6 : 6-trimethylcyclohex-1-en-1-yl residue and X is a vinyl group or an ethynyl group are obtained by reacting the corresponding alcohol with manganese dioxide in an inert organic solvent. Preferably the reaction is effected in an inert atmosphere in a temperature range 0-80 DEG C. in one of the following solvents: petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and dioxane. In examples, 6-methylocta-3 : 5 : 7-triene-2-one, 6-methylocta-3 : 5-dien-7-yn-2-one and 6-methyl-8-(21 : 61 : 61-trimethylcyclohex-11-en\11-yl) octa-3 : 5-dien-7-yn-2-one are prepared.
