Abstract

659,741. Machines for making wire ropes. HOLM, C. J. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33112. [Class 109] In a machine for the production of wire ropes, the bobbins supplying the wires are mounted on shafts on a bobbin frame, which shafts are inclined to the vertical axis of the machine and converge toward a common point, and the bobbins are suspended in a substantially horizontal plane at a level above or below a twisting mechanism, which latter performs the twisting of the wires about a substantially vertical axis. In the form shown, the bobbins 5, 7 are carried by a stationary annular frame 1 above the stationary twisting head 11 from which the twisted rope is drawn off on to a take-up bobbin 14 mounted on a frame 13 rotating about a vertical axis. The bobbins are rotatably supported in forks at the free ends of rotating shafts 6, 8, the axes of which remain stationary during the twisting operation. The axes of the shafts 6 converge downwardly towards an apex located on the axis of the twisting mechanism substantially at the point 11 at which the twisting operation is performed. The shafts 6 and 8 are rotated by means of belt drives 9, 10 so as to avoid twisting the wires or core about their own axes during the strand-forming operation. 'The bobbin frame 1 is mounted on a circular rail or track 2 by means of rollers 3, so that it may be rotated for changing the position of the bobbin carrying shafts to facilitate 'the substitution of full bobbins for spent ones. A locking device 4 is provided for maintaining the frame 1 in a stationary position during the twisting operation. Strands may be used instead of wires.
