Abstract

659,573. Forging; making turbine blades. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1948, No. 31092. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A method for the production of a finished article from a ferrous metal blank by a hot working operation comprises thinly coating the blank, prior to its being heated for hot working, with nickel, chromium or a nickel chromium alloy. A gas-turbine engine blade is made by upsetting, swaging or extruding a stainless, ferrous blank, machining or grinding the surface and then coating the blank to a depth of 0.002 to 0.003 inch with nickel, by plating or spraying. It is then heated and forged in one or more operations. Finally, the plating is removed by mechanical-, or electro-polishing.
