659,136. Moulding rubber articles; treating sensitized latex. CHASSAING, F. April 25, 1949, No. 10941. Convention date, May 10, 1948. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] Rubber articles are obtained by moulding and coagulating sensitized latex to form a wall of rubber which is then subjected to a stress causing its elongation, and then released so that it contracts and expels a great amount of the serum, the resulting irregular surface wall thus obtained being then heated to about 60‹ C., thus causing a further contraction whereupon the wall may be very quickly dried. In an example, the mould consists of an inner portion in the form of a hollow sphere 31 (Fig. 16) provided with a neck 32 and made of plaster or any other brittle material, and an outer shell 33 consisting of two parts bolted together. Sensitized latex is then poured in to fill space 34 and the whole assembly heated in tank 35 to 60‹ C. to cause coagulation of the latex. The mould is then opened and the rubber sphere expanded with compressed air, the air released, the fragile inner mould portion crushed and the pieces removed from the neck and the rubber sphere then immersed in water at 60‹ C., causing the rubber to contract and assume a very smooth surface. In other examples an inner tube (Figs. 1-14, not shown) and a rubber sheet (Figs. 23-26, not shown) are produced.
