Abstract

658,942. Radio signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 19, 1949, No. 24081. [Class 40 (v)] In a V.H.F. radio repeater station transmission is prevented when the signal strength falls below a predetermined value, or the noise level exceeds a predetermined value, by means actuated in dependence upon received signal strength or upon noise level at a predetermined circuit of the station. As shown in Fig. 2 a control voltage, derived from the LF. stage of a repeater of the type in which the received carrier frequency is retransmitted on a slightly different frequency, is applied to the control grid G2 of a control valve. The oscillator of the transmitting portion of the station comprises the tuned circuit L1, C1, and the other half of the double triode, the grid G1 of the oscillator valve being connected through a resistor R2 to the anode A2 of the control valve and through a resistor R3 to earth. While the grid G2 is highly negative with respect to the cathode no current flows through the control valve, the cathode tap T being adjusted so that in this condition the oscillator portion is working normally. When the negative potential on the grid G2 is reduced current commences to flow through the control valve increasing the potential drop across resistor R1 and lowering the potential of the grid G1 until oscillations stop, the position of the tap T or variation of one of the other resistors determining when this occurs. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), this arrangement is applied to crystal controlled oscillators. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the oscillator valve is a pentode whose screen potential is reduced, to stop oscillations, by the increase of anode current through the control valve. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the oscillator comprises a pentode associated with one portion of a double triode which acts as a cathode follower feeding back to the pentode through a piezo-electric crystal, the other portion of the double triode acting as a control valve to stop the oscillator.
