Abstract
658,940. Electric battery lamps and cigarette igniters. ELBRIC SOC. ANON. Aug. 31, 1949, No. 22649. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1948. [Classes 39(ii) and 75(iii)] A pocket lamp combined with an igniter for cigarettes and cigars comprises a casing 1 for a battery or accumulator 2, and a transversely disposed metal cylinder 10 which is provided with two spaced peripheral cavities 19, 29, containing contact members 20, 25 respectively, adapted to bear against the battery contacts 3, 4 when the cylinder 10 is rotated about its axis, rotation in one direction acting to switch on the lamp 16 and, in the other direction, to complete the circuit through an igniter filament 23. The metal cylinder 10 is retained in position by a semi-cylindrical cover 5 provided with side extensions with lugs to facilitate attachment to the casing by a screw 9 on one side and a stud within an aperture at the other side, longitudinal movement of the cylinder being prevented by end flanges 11, 13 of the same diameter as the cover 5. The flange 13, which is knurled to facilitate rotation of the metal cylinder 10, is attached to the end of the latter by screws, and serves to retain in position a lens 15 at the end of an insulating bush 14 located axially within the cylinder and enclosing a metal bulb socket. An insulated conductor 20 extends through a longitudinal slot in the bush 14 and connects the bulb holder to the battery terminal 3 when the cylinder 10 is rotated in the requisite direction. The circuit is completed from the centre contact of the bulb through a spring 17 and metal cylinder 10 to battery terminal 4. Rotation of the cylinder 10 in the opposite direction brings the battery terminal 4 into contact with the bottom end of an insulated screw 25, the head of which forms one end terminal of the igniter filament 23, the circuit being completed by the other terminal screw 24 which is screwed into the cylinder 10, the latter then being in contact with battery terminal 3. The igniter filament is mounted on a support of poor heat-conductivity, such as mica, provided with a transverse ridge 30, Fig. 3 (not shown), and located within a recess accessible through an opening 26 in the cover 5. The two extreme positions of the cylinder 10 are limited by an arcuate slot 35 therein which receives a screw 36 in the cover, and the intermediate or " off " position is registered when a spring-pressed ball engages an aperture 34 in the cover.
