Abstract

709,877. Lamps combined with writing instruments. LEGGE, F. P. April 13, 1953 [Aug. 25, 1952], No. 21254/52. Classes 39 (2) and 75 (3) A holder '10, Fig. 1, for a pen or pencil 11 has an electric lamp mounted in an offset position relative to its axis, the switch 21 controlling the circuit between the lamp and a battery or other source of current being arranged to be held closed by a gripping pressure in the act of writing. Fig. 3 shows a battery 19 mounted in a tubular casing 13 provided with a shoulder 17 near its forward end to form a seating for an insulating disc 16 forming a holder for a bulb 15, the adjacent end of the tube providing a support for a tubular hood 12 which is integral with the sleeve 10 carrying a ball point pen 11. A blade spring 14 serves to retain the pen in position within the sleeve 10. A resilient switch arm 21 riveted at one end to the casing 13 has its free end 23 bent inwardly so that it can be depressed through coincident apertures in the hood 12 and forward portion of the tube 13 to make contact with the lamp cap 24. In a modification, Fig. 6, a lamp bulb 45 is mounted at the end of an insulating sleeve 29 within a tubular housing 28 formed integrally with a parallel sleeve which receives a pen or pencil, and a spring- pressed contact 46 bearing against the centre contact of the bulb is connected by a lead 42 to one terminal of a battery contained in a casing carried in a pocket of the user. The other lead from the battery is connected to the sleeve holding the pen or pencil. The insulating sleeve 29 may be rotatable relative to its housing 28 and have a portion of its forward end removed so that when in the position shown the bulb circuit may be completed by depressing the inturned end of the resilient arm 51 on to the lamp cap. Accidental switching-on is prevented by rotating the sleeve 29 to bring the part 55 opposite the contact arm.
