Abstract

658,908. Making strip. STEVENS, A. H. (Hunter Douglas Corporation). June 17, 1949, No. 16191. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Rolling; broaching.-In a method of rolling strip metal to provide a finished product free from checks and cracks, a precise edge is formed on the strip prior to its reduction by rolling. The apparatus comprises roll stands 12, preferably two shaving devices 24, 24a and work-guides 90. Each stand 12, Figs. 2 and 4 comprises four members 28, 28a, 29, 31, held together by keys 53, 57 and keyways, and bolts 58, bearing blocks 33 being retained by plates 62, and adjusted vertically by screw jacks 36 against springs 34. Coolant inlet ports 46 and 42 are provided in the upper and lower members respectively. Each shaving device, Fig. 5, comprises blades 82, for operating on the edges of the strip, adjustable transversely to the strip on rod-like guides 84 by thumb screws 87 against springs 86, and the strip is guided between upper and lower strips of guide material such as hardwood, by ball bearing assemblies 74 eccentrically mounted for adjustment. Each work-guide 90, Fig. 8, comprises upper and lower members 93 and 91 respectively, forming a rectangular section channel between them and held together by thin bolts 98 which shear in the event of the strip jamming. When the lower guide member is thus broken away, it closes a micro-switch 99, which serves to stop the mill. The invention is applied to the rolling of aluminium strip for the manufacture of Venetian blinds, the rolled strip being cut into lengths and apertured.
