Abstract

1,165,156. Rolling. HILLE ENG. CO. Ltd. 9 Dec., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 53434/65. Heading B3M. A reversing rolling mill includes two pairs of rolls 10, 12, 14 and 16 in tandem, which rolls are driven in opposite senses so that the pairs can be used alternately for rolling stock in opposite directions, one roll 14 of the second pair being retractable to allow rolled stock to pass freely between the second pair, when the first pair of rolls is operative. In a second pass, the roll 14 is moved downwardly to an operative position, and the stock passes to the left between the rolls 10 and 12 (the roll 12 having first been retracted to an inoperative position). The pass line 20 is slightly lower than the pass line 18. The rolls 10 and 12 are screw adjusted in a common housing 40, while the rolls 12 and 14 are movable by hydraulic rams 70 and 74 between operative and retracted positions. Shoulders 72 and 76 in the housing windows are abutted by supports 54 and 56 for the rolls 12 and 14 respectively to determine the operative positions of the rolls. Packing pieces may be inserted between the shoulders and supports, to adjust the operative positions. Similarly, packing pieces may be used for determining the position of the non-retractable rolls 10 and 16. The two pairs of rolls may be mounted in separate housings, and, if desired, a tilting table can be positioned between the rolls to guide the stock clear of the inoperative rolls when being rolled by the operative ones. The upper roll of the second pair may be non-retractable, in place of the lower roll.
