Abstract
658,816. Flying boats. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND, Ltd. March 16, 1949, No. 7181. [Class 4] The hull of a flying boat incorporates a compartment having one wall constituted by a section of the planing bottom and another wall by a " viewing window " of appropriate non- metallic construction, said compartment being mounted so as to be capable of movement in relation to the hull between a waterborne position presenting in conjunction with the remainder of the hull a substantially continuous planing bottom, and a scanning position wherein the " viewing window " takes the place formerly occupied by the movable section of the planing bottom. The forward portion 10 of the planing bottom 11 forms one wall of a separate compartment of which the opposite wall 13 is formed. as a segment of a solid of revolution from a transparent material to constitute a window. The compartment is rotatable about the fore and aft axis A-B and when rotated 180 degrees from the position shown a radar scanner 18 can scan downwardly through the window 13. To enable hydrodynamic loads on the planing bottom 10 to be transferred directly to the structure the chines 15 depend on either side of the scanner compartment which is secured to the downward extensions by suitable locks. A water-tight door 17 is provided in the rear wall 16 of the recess 14 and it is stated that the device may be located at any position on the planing bottom.
