Abstract

In a furnace for the calcination of lime (see Group XII), powdered limestone is fed by a screw 37 into a casing 11 which is divided by apertured partitions 17, 44 and 53 into preheating, treatment and cooling chambers 13, 12 and 14, respectively, and compressed air or gas is supplied from a wind-box 58 and flows upwardly through the partitions to the outlet of a dust separator 29. The limestone forms a bed on the partition 17 which is maintained in a fluidized state by the upwardly-flowing air or gas, the surface level of the bed being determined <PICT:0658611/III/1> by the upper end of a valve-controlled pipe 41 through which the preheated material overflows to form a bed on the partition 44 which is similarly maintained in a fluidized state. A number of burners 62 for the injection of gaseous, liquid or pulverized fuel with or without air are arranged in the chamber wall, a further gas burner 61, used when starting up the furnace, being provided in the chamber 14. Calcined material overflows from the bed in the chamber 12 through a pipe 46 to form a similar fluidized bed in the chamber 14 and the cooled material overflows through a discharge pipe 54 fitted with a valve 55.
