Abstract

Saturated organic peroxides wherein one of the organic radicals attached to the peroxy group contains a polar group are obtained by reacting a tertiary organic hydro-peroxide with an olefinically unsaturated organic compound containing one or more olefinic double bonds activated by the attachment of a polar group to a carbon atom joined by said bonds. The polar group of the unsaturated compound may be cyano, carbonyl, carboxy or alkyl-esterified carboxy group. Preferably the reaction is effected in water or an inert solvent in the presence of alkaline material between 20 DEG and 100 DEG C. Examples are given of the preparation of tertiary butyl-2-cyano ethyl peroxide and methyl (3-tertiary-butyl-peroxy) propionate. Specification 577,841 is referred to.
