Abstract

Steroid substances rich in 7-halogencholesteryl esters suitable for conversion into 7-dehydro-derivatives are obtained by reacting a 3-carboxylic ester of cholesterol with a halogenator of the formula <FORM:0608482/IV(b)/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are lower alkyl groups and X is chlorine or bromine in an inert solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride. Preferably equimolecular proportions of the cholesteryl ester and halogenator are used and the reaction is carried out at the boiling point of the solvent in the presence of an organic peroxide, e.g. benzoyl or acetyl peroxide. Excluded from the scope of the present invention are esters, the acyloxy fragment of which contains any grouping which reacts either with the halogenator or with the halogenated cholesterol. In examples: (1) a carbon tetrachloride solution of cholesteryl acetate is treated with tertbutyl hypochlorite in the pressure of benzoyl peroxide; (2) as in (1), using tert-butyl hypobromite. The products of the examples may if desired be dehydrohalogenated. Specification 574,432 is referred to.
