Abstract

The invention comprises 1 : 2- epoxy-4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8 : 8 hexahalo-4 : 7-methano-3a : 4 : 7 : 7a-tetrahydroindanes of the formula <FORM:0681495/IV (b)/1> where X is bromine, chlorine or a mixture thereof and their preparation of oxidizing the cyclopentene ring of a 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8 : 8-hexahalo - 4 : 7 - methano - 3a : 4 : 7 : 7a-tetrahydroindene (the Diels Alder adduct of hexahalocyclopentadiene and cyclopentadiene) with an organic per acid, such as perbenzoic, peracetic or mono-perphthalic acid, to form the epoxide. In an example the Diels Alder adduct of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and cyclopentadiene is treated with peracetic acid in acetic acid to give the epoxide of the above structural formula in which X is a chlorine atom.
