Abstract

658,274. Electromagnetic switches. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON, CO., Ltd. May 10, 1948, No. 12819. Convention date, May 10, 1947. [Class 38(v)] In an electromagnetic contactor, a quick break upon de-energization of the magnet 6 is produced by the armature 7 striking the blade-spring mounted contact 14 at its centre of percussion 21 and by making the moments of inertia of the armature and contact member approximately equal. In the form shown the armature 7 is pivoted at its lower end by a rubber grommet 9 and itself carries the cantilever blade spring 13 carrying the contact 14. A spring 12 holds the parts in the position shown. On energization the armature moves a little distance further after the contacts 2, 14 engage, so that on de-energization, the armature moves to strike the rivet 21 and its momentum is substantially transferred to the contact member which moves at a velocity of at least 30 inches per second for the first 25 mms. of contact-opening movement.
