[Class 142(iii)] [Also in Group XXXII] After a picking stroke, the picking stick (not shown) is retracted by its return spring until a spring 17, coupled to the stick by a link 15, balances the return spring to bring the stick to rest before it is fully retracted; meanwhile a piston P has displaced liquid freely from a cylinder C to a reservoir R through holes 28 in the cylinder wall and a hole 45 in the piston. When the shuttle strikes the picking stick, the piston is pushed further into the cylinder, .closing the holes 28, so that all the displaced liquid passes through the hole 45 which is progressively closed by a metering pin 43, thereby arresting the shuttle smoothly. On the picking stroke, a non- return valve 36 opens to allow the cylinder to refill freely; the final part of the stroke is cushioned by a spigot 51 on the piston entering a hole 52 between the cylinder and the reservoir. A similar construction described has the metering pin on the piston, and another also has the non-return valve in the piston.
