Abstract
657,353. Ice-making. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 4, 1949, No. 3073. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1948. [Class 29] A grid for a domestic ice tray 11 comprises a central longitudinal wall 21 and inclined transverse walls 22 defining open topped spaces 40 having bottoms 41 and spaces 25 closed by top members 23 so that, after partial freezing, a body of unfrozen liquid is trapped in the spaces 25 and in freezing expands to stress the grid and tray and then break the ice-bonds, the top members 23 being located below the tray walls so as to contact the water at its normal level. The tray has inclined walls and the bottom is inclined at the ends 15 to allow flexing of the tray by downward pressure. One of the ends or both of the ends of wall 21 is fitted with a handle 49. The tray may be made of metal such as aluminium and the grid may be moulded in a plastic material such as polystyrene and may have a water-repellent surface.
